The Northeast

Since we first picked up a video camera in the summer of 1986, BKVP has been filming railroads in the Northeast.
Even if we didn't film it, we've come across some wonderful material from other videographers and
produced some great programs. "Montreal's Machines" has been our biggest selling and highest reviewed.
You'll also see some very unique moments in history such as

loaded coal trains with Providence & Worcester power running on the former D&H in Eastern NY!
Speaking of Northeast Railroads, we've covered CONRAIL like no other. Be sure to check out
our outstanding selection of CONRAIL DVD's!

Along the north bank of the Mohawk River in eastern Upstate New York is CSXT's mainline to and from the Midwest. As with most mainlines in the United States, traffic has been on the increase over the last several years. On a beautiful mid-June day, one of the longest days of the year, we set out to document the passage of every train from sunrise to sunset. The location was from the grounds at Lock 13 of the New York State Canal System. Even with over 15 hours of daylight, it was a pleasant surprise to see 47 trains! Plenty of foreign power, and a bit of the canals recreational boating passing by. This program shows all of them, complete with their symbols, origin, destination, and time of day using brief on-screen graphics.

In late 1990, the Canadian Pacific acquired the D&H after several years of uncertainty. Fortunately and eventually, the line has been revived. This program shows the trains on the D&H North End in 1991 at Saratoga Springs & vicinity, and then again in 1994 when we covered the entire line from just northwest of Albany to Rouses point, NY. Footage is presented chronologically, and you'll witness many "un-retired" MLW's along with D&H lightning stripes and an assortment of Canadian Pacific's EMD/GMD power through the change of seasons. Our visit concludes with a trip on Amtrak's southbound "Adirondack" where we filmed from the rear vestibule on a perfect autumn day!

The CSX Selkirk Branch runs for slightly over 41 miles, cutting away from the Chicago line near Rotterdam, NY, then climbing out of the Mohawk River Valley to reach the immense Selkirk Yard. Overpasses closed to motor vehicles, giant bridges over major rivers, busy interlockings, and easily accessible grade crossings are just some of the highlights for the Railfan visiting this area. In this video, we will take you to all of the popular locations, as well as a few spots off-the-beaten-path! CSX trains are often pulled with a great assortment of foreign and leased power! Trains are identified with on screen graphics that include symbol, origin, & destination!

This program is the result of BKVP's continuing coverage of the action and changes.   You'll see trains from spots as far west as Utica, NY, on the Mohawk Sub, as far south as Iona Island on the River Line, and as far east as Framingham, MA on the Boston Line! Very minimal narration describes the changes that occurred over the period. Brief on-screen graphics identify all trains and locations!

In early 2006, the Providence & Worcester Railroad, already an innovator in the Northeast, was contracted to move imported coal from the Port of Providence, Rhode Island to a power plant just west of Binghamton, New York. The route the coal trains would take involved 4 railroads by the time they reached Binghamton. The exciting news for area Railfan's is that the trains would keep the P&W power for the trip!   This program documents 5 of the 7 trains as they operated on the ex D&H line from Delanson to just north of Binghamton. We also show other trains that ran on these days!
